First Steps in choosing a Sat Nav
By Sam Samuel
First things to consider when choosing a Garmin (or other) GPS Device. 1 - Define its use. Do you want a totally in car system, or are you an outdoors person? 2 - What level of mapping do you require? - Just auto routing, topographic maps or will basemaps do? Do you REALLY need detailed street maps for all of Europe? 3 - How upgradeable is it? Does it use standard memory modules? Does it have a standard power source? Most In car systems (EG Garmin Nuvi range) can have outdoor mapping installed on them (EG Garmin Mapsource TOPO), so it can be used to guide you to our destination, and then used as an outdoor aid. Conversely, Outdoor devices (EG Garmin Oregon 400T, Colorado 300, GPSMap 60CSx) are now easily capable of running Road Routing mapping (EG Garmin City Navigator Europe) so they can be used in truly rugged environments, with highly detailed terrain maps (EG Garmins 1:250,000 Ordnance Survey grade range) then dropped into an incar cradle to guide you home afterwards. The charging of your device is also worth considering. Does it draw power through a standard mini USB socket? (Many devices do, nowadays) Or does it require its own special connector (Meaning lose the charger, pay a large [premium for a branded replacement, when other devices have a generic alternative) or does it use batteries. |
